The Second Task Of Marriage John Coppola 4/26/00 THL 467 The Second Task of Marriage The following essay will attempt to explain in detail what exactly the second task of marriage entails. Procreation as a task of marriage seems to be a fairly simple and straight forward one at first, but to fully understand it, one must have a deep understanding of the Catholic notion of love, sexuality, embodiment, and other moral norms relevant to various aspects of this task of marriage. With regard to love, a married couple with the desire to have children of their own must have a certain type of unconditional love for each other before they are truly ready to have children. When talking about sexuality, a couple must have an understanding of Catholic beliefs about sexuality which deal with the meaning of sexuality and the practices of sexuality considered acceptable and unacceptable by the Church. The topic of embodiment is a very broad one, and it is relevant to almost every aspect of marriage because it has to do with the idea that all humans are embodied in the image of God. The following essay will cover, in more detail, each of these ideas in order to show how important each is to the Catholic belief about the second task of marriage. It has already been stated that the second task of marriage is service to life through the action of procreation and education. Love plays a very important role in accomplishing this task both in the way that it is needed for procreation and the proper upbringing of children. Within marriage, a certain kind of love must exist for the second task of procreation to be carried out properly. First of all, there is romantic love that can come in the form of lust, infatuation, and sentimental love. Romantic love is an important component to the relationship of a married couple, but romantic love alone is an insufficient base on which to build a strong marriage. The kind of love that is needed to create a strong, stable marriage is responsible, unconditional love called agopic love. Agopic love is a kind of intangible love that can only be gained by being with another person for a good amount of time and truly getting to know everything about them while maintaining your love for them. What is meant by truly knowing the other person is that both individuals within a relationship know and understand the great, the good, the fair, and the faulty things about each other to the point that no personality traits of each other go unrevealed. This kind of mutual love can bring a couple so close to each other that an unbreakable bond is created. The strength of agopic love is such that a couple would never consider separating, and herein lies the reason why agopic love is so important for carrying out the second task of marriage. It is the Catholic view that before a couple decides to have children they need to come to a mutual understanding that they will do everything in their power to raise their children the best they can in accordance with Church teaching. This includes life long unconditional love of children and each other, because, without love the family cannot live, grow, and perfect itself as a community of persons (FC 32). Pope John Paul II puts it best in Familiaris Consortio when he says, the family has the mission to guard, reveal and communicate love, and this is a living reflection of and a real sharing in God's love for humanity and the love of Christ the Lord for the Church His bride (FC 31). Agopic love is the only type of love comparable to God's divine love of all human beings, and it is a prerequisite for the proper accomplishment of service to life through procreation and education. The Catholic understanding of sexuality is another important factor that a married couple must be fully aware of before attempting to carry out the second task of marriage. The importance of sexuality relates mostly to the act of procreation. The act of sex, or conjugal love is regarded in Church teaching as very sacred. This analysis seeks to explore the use and application of symbolism in the short story. First, the driftwood has been used to symbolize Peyton Farquharââ¬â¢s unattainable freedom. As it floats over the water, so do his thoughts and fantasies. He visualizes himself executing a very brave escape through the water (Sergel 7). However, this does not materialize as he is already hanged and it is his imaginations, which flow into a fantasy world. He reasons that if he could free his hands, he would escape through the water to his family. ââ¬Å"If I could let go my hands, I would throw off the nooseâ⬠¦and get away homeâ⬠(Bierce 35). In addition, the owl creek bridge has also been used to build on symbolism. It suggests connection and transition evident in the story. The br idge was used to allow the enemy forces to further advance into Alabama, bringing the civil war into culmination (Clinton 78). It also symbolizes Farquharââ¬â¢s attempt to disconnect himself from his body by allowing his thoughts to plunge into the fantasy world. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦the light about him shot growingly with the noise of a loud splash, and frightful roar was in his ears, and all seemed cold and darkâ⬠(Bierce 39). Similarly, the bridge joins his life and death, which occurs after his hanging, just as it connects the two banks of the river. The bridge as well suggests a transition between fantasy and reality as he escapes to the water. Ambrose Bierce has also employed the use of realism in his short story. The setting of the story is in North Alabama at the time of the civil war. The set-up of the execution team is close to what happens in reality. The positioning of the soldiers and their superiors, and the way in which power and authority are displayed is evident in a military setting (Essential short stories 29). As Farquhar drifts in the fantasy world, the reader cannot tell any difference from the real world. It appears to be too real for one to question it. Acer Case
This time cellphones where not yet even invented so the market was pretty good for a starter. This is I believe one of the reasons why Acerââ¬â¢s startup was outstanding. One of the other many reasons is because of their willingness to try everything that came their way. They dared to do everything, from providing engineering to publishing trade journals. They were not hesitant and were very hungry to succeed. Acers CEO Shih was also a very charismatic leader, transferring very important philosophies to his employees hence creating a strong foundation. He paid his employees modest salaries and offered them equity. The employees in turn felt a sense of ownership and this had a very good impact on their performances. They were very loyal and followed Shihââ¬â¢s leadership. Shi did not only offer key employees equity but also delegated substantial decision-making responsibility to them. Empowering his employees in such a way only made them more loyal and committed to the company. Shih also believed and valued his employeeââ¬â¢s education and created an environment where people were ready to learn and improve themselves. Joint ventures also cut down costs and developed good relationships with suppliers. The whole work environment was like a family and everyone there was very comfortable and happy. When employees are happy, the companyââ¬â¢s customers are also happy. All of these reasons and more made Acer then known as Multitech outscore the other Taiwanese PC companies. After a strong decade of growth, why did Acerââ¬â¢s growth and profitability tumble in the late 1980ââ¬â¢s? How do you evaluate Leonard Liuââ¬â¢s performance? Acers was founded in the mid 70ââ¬â¢s and at that time the market was small. At the end of the 80ââ¬â¢s there was a lot of competition and Acer had to struggle with these forces. Its competitors were producing PCââ¬â¢s at very low prices and Acer had to match that. One of the other reasons why Acer struggled is because it had expanded rapidly. This growth caused a shortage in management and some outside help ââ¬ËParatroopersââ¬â¢ had to be brought in. Because of Acers overseas expansion these newcomers were supposed to help with the transition since they knew something about the international market. This however caused confusion in the company because of the culture clashes. The family culture was intruded by outside cultures and the working environments were no longer splendid. As mentioned before, happy employees lead to happy customers. Unhappy employeeââ¬â¢s in turn lead to unhappy customers. Acer was also struggling financially. Expansion needs resources and these were not available. In order to solve this Acer had to go public and create equity by selling its stock on the market. As if this was not enough, Acer also had to deal with rebranding. This took up a lot of Shihââ¬â¢s valuable time. I look at Leu in different ways. First of all; he was just a man given a big responsibility and was trying to do the best he could. Some of his transformations were in the long run effective. He reorganized the company and this was very effective. Leu also gave some responsibility to the managers for the outcomes of their work, this made them work harder and they were careful in their decision making. However this changed the whole atmosphere in the company, the culture was changing and this was not appreciated. Culture is something one cannot change overnight but Leu tried to do that and it backfired. He tried to change everything overnight and this was never going to work with a company like Acer that was happy with their current culture and comfortable with it. Leu also spending a lot of money did not help and employees in the end lost faith in him. How effective was Shih in rebuilding Acer in the early/mid 90ââ¬â¢s? What do you think of his new business concept (ââ¬Å"fast foodâ⬠model, Uniload, Smiling Curve, etc. ) and his new organization model (Client-Server, 21 in 21, etc. )? Is this a visionary framework for Acerââ¬â¢s future competitiveness, or a random series of ill-conceived top-down initiatives? Shih came back with some lessons learnt. Some of which came from Leu despite him leaving in a bad way. He found Acers organization was better and this helped him achieve his goals. He brought in new philosophies which lifted up the company and he communicated his ideas to Acer employees making sure they got the message and then acted upon it. The philosophy like ââ¬Ëfast food businessesââ¬â¢ helped Acer to lower its costs and in the end make more profits. I believe through these philosophies Shih managed to get the attention of its employees and the message was therefore well communicated. Despite these strategies being vague I believe they were visionary. Acer needed to be redeemed to its old position and be given back its power. Its employees needed to be encouraged and be motivated to work. These strategies did the trick and created a turnaround for Acer. As Stan, what action would you take on Aspire? Should he approve its continued development? Should he allow AAC to continue to lead the project? With all of the changes Acer underwent, I would say Aspire was a good innovation and it is a chance not to pass. Aspire is a revolutionary innovation and if Shih lets it go, it will go to his competitors and he will loose out on a good opportunity. Him blessing this innovation will mean that he does what he preaches. He was always encouraging his employees to use their knowledge and skills and do something innovative. This was a chance to prove that he would support those innovations. I also think since AAC came up with the innovation they should be the ones to lead the project. This may even be an opportunity for Acer to expand deeply into other regions. Should Aspire become a global product? If so, who should manage the worldwide? Of course Aspire should go global!!! If the product is successful in one region they could try it in other regions and see how it performs there. In my opinion Taiwan should manage it because it is after the mother company and they have more experience in managing new products. Non Verbal Body Language
Body Language. It has been said that actions speak louder than words, but, what exactly is body language? The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines it as: ââ¬Å"The gestures, movements, and, mannerisms by which a person or animal communicates with others. So, now knowing this definition the phrase ââ¬Å"Actions speak louder than words â⬠starts to make a lot more sense. Even though our body language does not reveal all our innermost thoughts and feelings, it does not mean it is to be ignored. It plays a key role in human communication.Body language simply is communication without words. Therefore it is non-verbal communication. It is the bodyââ¬â¢s natural language. Over half of our whole message is communicated through our body language. Our verbal message communicated in a conversation is nothing compared to nonverbal message. Your words may sound genuine and you may think your a good liar, but if you have poor body language your conveyor will know right away you are not bei ng genuine. Most body language messages are sent through our face and gestures.On our face, the way the corners of our mouth wrinkle up or down show whether we are happy or sad, how are forehead creases when we are angry, or how are eyes wrinkle when we laugh genuinely are all conveyors of certain messages. The face and the eyes many meanings and can be recognized or decoded easily. Facial expressions are a very important part of communication because they convey the inner workings of emotion. It is widely used by nearly everyone, when trying to strengthen a particular idea or meaning.Some people might not even know they are using it. Body language can be both intended and accidental. That being said our body laguage can contradict wat our verbal or intended message was meant to be. Messages can be passed between people, without any communication being needed. Words are not needed, as the body movements are a language itself, which tells the whole story. It is also used as a form of flirtation between couples, and also is a road people may take to get what they want.Knowing how to read body language is a useful communication skill, so is knowing how to use it. Facial expressions and body language can help give clues as to what people are thinking. We make constant movements every second of the day without realizing it. Trying to read facial expressions can be very hard, because they are so quick. Body language, on the other hand, is more easily read. We are taught some very obvious types of body language, like that someone is lying when they will not look you in the eye, but there are many ore than that.Watching people from a distance, you can usually determine how they feel about each other, whether they are friends, family, or just plain strangers. Body language is something we see everyday that helps us to communicate without words. Body language plays a huge part in many areas of the work industry. One example of this is in the Hospitality industry, especi ally in a bar, restaurant and hotel environment while serving and helping customers and patrons.Another example of body language in a workplace is the type of attitude you may display when being spoken to by a higher ranked individual in any branch of the armed services. Be it Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Gaurd. Let's take the Army for a more specific example. In the Army we have a specific set of rules written in what are known as Army Regulations, and in these regulations it is outlined that we must show our military superiors the utmost respect and follow every one of their lawful orders without question.As i said previously people may express certain non-verbal gestures without meaning to or even without knowing they did. So, for example when a soldiers mind is occupied with other tasks at hand or just not paying attention a much higher ranked individual could make an on the spot correction to the soldier and the soldier being preoccupied could accidentally shrug i t off and show disrespect without meaning to. Now, with that being said, that is by no means an excuse to disrespect a senior enlisted Non-commisioned officer.It is the soldiers duty to correct himself so that another higher ranked individual does not have to stop wat he is doing, such as getting briefed or attending an important huddle and correct the soldier on something as petty and easily avoidable as not wearing his patrol cap outdoors. which is clearly required under army regulation 670-1. Body language in the Army is a very important thing indeed. If you are not careful your accidental gestures can show a great deal of disrespect. ven theings as little as turning away from someone too early or not turning around to acknowldge someone fast enough can be taken in a disrespectful manner. Appearance is another important aspect body language. We use our bodies continuously to send messages and reinforce anything communicated earlier. The way we dress is very important in effective ly communicating. For example, if we someone at a formal event wearing jeans it can send out many mixed messages. For a punk rock star it might say ââ¬ËI do not careââ¬â¢ maybe in a good way but for the marketing manager of a firm it might say ââ¬ËI do not careââ¬â¢ in a bad way.Clothes are only one aspect of how we dress. Body piercing, excessive or minimal use of perfume, general body odor, and how we wear makeup also give out messages. So in conclusion, non-verbal communication or body laguage is a very important part of our everyday communication and human interaction. It has a huge impact on how we as people are percieved, and, without meaning to one of our habitual gestures, movements, or mannerisms can change the outcome of a conversation and greatly offend your listener. Be careful of your body language it can make or break a conversation.
